When a dental filling is installed, it is married to the surrounding tooth enamel to create a strong bond meant to last for years. As the years go by this strong connection can gradually start to degrade. This is often a side effect of inconsistent oral hygiene practices that demineralize the nearby tooth enamel.

Should one of your dental fillings fall out, you need to have it examined by an experienced dentist like Dr. Shiva Hogugi as soon as possible. After a thorough examination, we can help you understand the treatment options needed to restore it.

If the original dental filling was large, or it affected multiple surfaces of the tooth, there might not be enough healthy tooth enamel remaining to repair the tooth with a new dental filling. In a case like this Dr. Hogugi might recommend restoring the tooth with a dental crown.

This involves removing the tooth enamel layer to leave behind a small post which is known as an abutment.  This will later serve to anchor the dental crown into your mouth. Then a detailed impression will be created of the abutment and any related teeth in the area. Then we will protect the abutment by installing a temporary crown. The impression will then be sent to a dental lab where your dental crown will be created.

You’ll need to return to Dr. Hogugi’s dental office when your new dental crown is ready. This appointment will be brief as he uses a strong dental adhesive to bond it to the abutment.

If you live in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and you have recently lost a dental filling, you should not delay in calling 248-669-5110 to have it treated at Shiva Hogugi, DDS.
